Taken from the ATA homepage:

Third hotel for Alton Towers Resort
Wednesday, 1st April 2009

Plans for a third hotel due to open in 2012 have leaked onto the internet.

Codenamed Hunters Lodge, the 37 million investment reaffirms the company's focus on short breaks, with the theme park as the centrepiece.

The new hotel will seemingly be similar in style to the Holiday Inn that was recently opened at Chessington, and will be located to the left of the original hotel. Fans of the park will recognise this area as the land used for Field of 1000 Screams, the Hallowe'en scare maze, for the past two years.

The hotel will allegedly have more than 230 bedrooms, two bars and two restaurants - making it by far the largest of the three hotels. The plans seem to point towards the hotel being of a higher "luxury" standard than the existing ones, which will presumably mean a higher tariff too.

Finally, there is also the possibility that the Monorail may be extended slightly to accommodate for the increased distance to the new hotel. This would be unlikely however, due to the costs involved.

We hope to have the plans online later today - check back for updates.

Yeah this has been on the cards for some time. I do find it surprising though given the cost of the hotels and generally speaking they are not usually fully booked unless you try and get a room peak time on a weekend. I think the money would be better spent doing up the AT hotel and perhaps expanding that out a bit to the left. If a luxury hotel is to be built I dread to think what the rates would be, its already 220 a night B&B in the AT hotel, add on themepark entrance and waterpark and it comes to over 300 for a night.

Why they cant spend the money on the park and the existing hotels and improving what they have got I dont know. Just out of interest, how many rooms do the two existing hotels have - I would also be keen to see the occupancy figures over the past few years for the hotels....

interesting news smile.gif kinda glad its not that casino themed one that was talked about ages and ages ago. tacky.

it would have been cooler if it was something more affordable for the folks that dont have megabuks who cant already stay in the original hotels. but hey. Id rather it went towards the park too.

This sounds Great biggrin.gif
Perhaps they decided they liked my idea biggrin.gif

QUOTE (Altonator @ Aug 23 2005, 1:27 PM) *
I would build a 3rd hotel on the land to the left of the Alton Towers Hotel (behind the spa building) and theme it all on Alton Towers Rides and attractions past and present even the bedrooms perhaps 1st floor childrens rides 2nd floor family rides and 3rd floor coasters and thrill rides and also open a musem next to the 3rd hotel which explains the history of the park and tells you about old rides using pics videos etc and build a new water ride on the car park near Air (a family ride is needed here) and the new water ride and Air could extend the oasis of calm and the water ride could go right across to Cariba Creek (outside area) and back to air. Then the parking spaces which are lost would be replaced by tarmacing the overflow car parks (fields on the left of the approach road) and I would extend the monorail to the new car park.
What do you think?

Please theme the whole of this hotel on the park past and present smile.gif
What do you think of my theme idea?
Thunder Looper Suite anyone?
Also completion in 2012 just in time for the london olmpics. this development has got to happen biggrin.gif

TowersTimes have also reported this, with a bit more info:

QUOTE (TowersTimes)
With increasing gate figures and high occupancy levels across both hotels, Merlin and Alton Towers have drawn up plans for a third hotel at the resort, due to open in the Spring of 2012.

The hotel (codenamed "Hunters Lodge") will be located to the left of the Alton Towers Hotel (on land that has been used for Hallowe'en Scare Mazes in the past) and TowersTimes believe that it will comprise over 230 bedrooms, 2 bars, 2 restaurants and other "unique" facilities not found in the exisiting hotels.

Upon closer inspection of the plans, it seems that the hotel could follow a style akin to that of the new Holiday Inn at Chessington World of Adventures. It is set to take a "lodge" theme.

TowersTimes also believe that the hotel will carry a four star superior rating, which will be higher than that of the existing hotels. It is believed that even the most standard bedrooms will have "unique" touches, making every stay slightly different.

It has also been rumoured, but not confirmed, that the 2012 development will also consist of an extension to the Monorail due to the relative distance between the existing station and the proposed site of the new hotel.

The project is expected to cost roughly 37million (by comparison, Splash Landings cost 30million in 2003) and it is designed to be a sustainable hotel.

More news as we get it.

Seems a bit of a contradiction - 4 star superior, and Holiday Inn-likeness?

Holiday Inn at Chessington is a 4 star hotel as it is, it only needs the "superior" requirements to be added to it.

The only reason im thinking it may be true is that there has been talk in the past about a 3rd hotel, rumours were about it being like a casino, then there was a rumour about individual chalet type accomodations, and as such a "hunters lodge" kinda place would be possible. Then again it could be an April fool.....

Aw, I was expecting an April Fool's joke involving the indoor section of SW6 and watching people cry with excitement over a ridiculous OTT and implausible mechanism.

Confirmation that this was an April Fools joke from Towers Times.

QUOTE
TowersTimes would like to confirm that there have been no hotel plans released for 2012, and that the Speedo-clad 50 year old that jumped into the Shark pool inside the new Sea Life aquarium was, after all, a complete figment of the imagination. We would, however, like to thank forum member "Dave" for his contribution of superb hotel designs.

Thanks for sharing April Fools Day 2009 with us and thanks to Alton Towers Almanac for the collaboration on the hotel plans

I got my hopes up for a while there... cruel, cruel people. sad.gif

If it's any consolation, Alton have been planning a third hotel for years, and it's in their current "ten year development plan". smile.gif

Cheers to TowersTimes for suggesting we do the joint April Fools thang - they did most of the work TBH, I just re-wrote the news item for our site and posted it!

Dagnammit!

I went through the following stages:
  • Read title, think, "Pfft, April Fool's post. Let's see what they wrote."
  • One post in, think, "Yeah, nice hoax, would be nice if true."
  • Read further, think, "Hang on, TTF too? No way, they picked up the story and rehashed it as true? Major April Fool success!"
  • Read more, think, "But they had more info? Maybe ATA copied TTF's story instead? No. Perhaps... is it true? Is this story the real thing? Hmm, a lodge-style hotel could work..."
  • Get to hoax debunking post. Think, "Ah. Yep, nice one. Grrr."

And the nominee for the most average and uninteresting April Fool's joke ever are...

Isn't the whole point of an April Fool's gag to create something outrageous that people believe and then kick themselves after for not realising it was a joke? Not something reasonably believable that simply turns out to be made up?

Here's a great April Fool... I had chips for tea tonight... No I didn't! I had a pizza really - April Fool!!!
That's on about the same par.

Funnily enough, the Park are actually considering a third hotel. Its part of the Ten year development plan which will be agreed in principle with the local authority (SMDC) soon. See link-
