It's not been confirmed officially, but its supposedly being rethemed to sonic the hedgehog. There have been a few photos floating around that people have taken on the winter weekend days, which show that the supports are being painted blue anyway.

TTF are confirming this today as a member has seen a Sonic-themed Maurer Sohne spinning coaster car in a 2010 welcome pack/brochure - no picture available as of yet due to the image in the brochure being so small.

Sega are releasing a brand new "old school style" 2-d side scrolling platformer Sonic game next year, currently codenamed Project Needlemouse (which was the original name given to Sonic whilst the first in the series was being developed). And it will be the 20th Anniversary of the first Sonic game in 2011. So it will fit in nicely with Sega's projects, in an attempt to probably revive the brand (lets face it, Mario has kind of taken over in recent years since the demise of the dreamcast)

While I'm not convinced it'll be a good fit with the park, I do think the idea of a Sonic themed spinning coaster is quite cute smile.gif

I'm not completely convinced. It's supposed to be opening next month is it not? The ride line up for that certainly still says Spinball Whizzer.

Fingers crossed though!

It absolutely should be open for February, providing there are no technical problems on the ride.

Dear Thomas

Happy New Year

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you but I have been on holiday. I am sure that you will have picked up press reports by now relating to Spinball Whizzer and the fact that we are in partnership with Sega resulting in a retheme to the ride to coincide with the relaunch of Sonic. We hope that the retheme will be complete for our February half-term opening.

Kind regards

Morwenna

Anyone got any concrete proof of this? All I see is text or shopped pics. No press release from the park?

There is a photo on Towers Times somewhere I have seen that shows the supports being painted, but I didn't take that as concrete proof - they could have just been repainting it, although there are rides there that need it more [cough]Oblivion[/cough]

Don't really mind the idea - one of the better sponsorships as it actually goes with the ride, both in terms of function and target audience.
But why this year? Surely thirteen and this should occur on seperate years in order to recieve the maximum publicity over the next few years?

As spotted by RPG in this photo ( http://twitpic.com/ww15c ) Spinball now has a new access staircase leading to the half pipe turn (compare with this photo in the gallery http://gallery.towersalmanac.com/displayim...um=25&pos=5 )

So is this going to be much more than a paint job, a few stickers and maybe a plastic Sonic statue? Are they totally scrapping the pinball theme, because they could both work together. Not that the game is at all relevant anymore. They are releasing a new back-to-the-roots 2D Sonic title next year though.

Spinball Whizzer's repainting was a H&S recommendation, I believe. I think I've got used to Oblivion now tbh.

All the Spinball theming was still in place on NY day, only difference was the dark blue paint on the supports. Was nothing in any of the hotel literature mentioning any Sonic retheme - and the literature was up to date as it was showing the new 30th Birthday logos.

TTF said it was only a tiny image with a Sonic logo on the side of the car, no text or "Relaunched for 2010... " etc
