Taken from the ATA homepage:

Runaway Mine Train Closed until 2007
Reported on Thursday 7th September

Contradicting earlier reports, it has been announced that the RMT will stay closed until next year.

The ride, which closed following an accident in mid-July, was given the all-clear the following month by the Health and Safety Executive.

However, the damage done to the track and the trains in the crash will take too long to repair satisfactorily for the ride to reopen before the end of this year's open season.

The Park's Head of Technical Services, Terry Dunn, said: "Obviously, health and safety is our most important consideration, and there is still a lot of work to be done to the track following the unfortunate incident earlier this year.

"In addition, we have sent the carriages back to the manufacturer in Germany for a complete refurbishment, which is a time consuming process. We don't want to rush anything, so have decided to delay the re-opening until next season."

It gives us something to look forward to next year as there will be no new rides.

Ah well, better it open next year in better condition than rushing to fix it by the end of this season.

To be fair, it seems that plans were set for the ride to reopen before the end of the season, and TT just reported that, which is fair enough. The park change their minds constantly so you're always in danger of posting one thing one day and then then some contradicting it the next. It's either that or never to post the news until the day it reopens, so... tongue.gif

I certainly missed it when I went to alton towers last week, even though it was a very small ride, i really enjoyed riding it and it was a lot of fun.

I remember the first time I went on it, it went a lot faster than I was expecting.

I bet AT get so desperate to reverse the current trend of less park visitors each year that they actually have the nerve to promote RMT as 'new' ride for 2007! biggrin.gif It will even say so on the map. ph34r.gif

I wouldn't actually object to them saying something like 'Runaway Mine Train Is Back for 2007 - better than ever' - if perhaps they add a small effect or something to the ride, I think this would be a very legitimate and good way to promote a ride that is actually loved by masses of people. I think it would be good to promote some of the 'lesser' rides, such as RMT, Ripsaw etc. One of the rides at AT that is closest to peoples hearts, for sure.

Cool, on ATA main page it says RMT is back open! But I am confused about it being 'significantly shortened.' Has track been taken out? It must not have been anywhere noticeable as never noticed it shortened anywhere. And why have they shortened it?

EDIT: Ok stupid me, It's the TRAIN that has been shortened. I had to go to *shudder* Towerstimes to realise it was the train. I read ATA's news wrong, although Towers Times made it more clear when explaining about only 8 carriages being used.

Excellent. Question - if its shorter, does that make it faster?

Lol not this again. Some people say yes, some say no. I assumed it would go slightly slower as there is less weight, but it is generally a powered coaster, not really a 'coaster' as some would say tongue.gif
When it was a bit shorter some time ago, maybe early last year...? people said it was faster, but I thought it was just the same and just in people's mid it was faster because it's shorter.

Anyway, the only real question that really matters is, are queues longer? Answer, most likely yes.

Apparently the train will return to normal length soon enough, the park are just awaiting the refurbished cars back from Mack.

If it were a rollercoaster, it'd be slower. As it's powered it'll be faster.

Less weight, but the same power from the track...

Afetr riding the RMT today I can say it's great for it to be back, as mentioned in the news post the train has been refurbished by Mack and is missing a few cars that are due to be added when they arrive back from Mack. The ride certainly feels slower than before with the corners being less forcefull but after not riding for 8 months I have nothing to compare it with recently.

The ride did close mid afternoon again to fix a slight problem with the train, but re-opened again later in the afternoon and they were letting most people have 3 laps and staff wereencouraging people to make noise as the train passed through the station.

When people say its been refurbished, what do they mean? Does it look completly different?
