Not a great deal of info at the moment but a 17 year old girl has plunged from Hydro at Wales's premier theme park, Oakwood.

The fall wasn't fatal but there was also a young boy involved who has been airlifted to hospital.

This is the same type of ride from which a fat American fell and died, leading to the installation of a convoluted harness system on that ride (Perilous Plunge), a safety feature that is missing from Oakwood's version I believe.

More news available on BBC.

Jeez... that is not good news at all. sad.gif

The overhead restraints are missing from Hydro... Call me insensitive, but I kind of wonder how this accident can happen. I really, really hope it's not some fault of the ride-ops or the actual ride restraint system...

But however it happened, it's real bad, sad news.

It is very bad news, my thoughts go out to the family of the people concerned.

If you have any info on the safety of this ride, or how rides simular to it have suffered simular incidents and needed improving it might be a good idea to send the info both to Oakwood,
Oakwood,
Canaston Bridge
Narberth
Pembrokeshire
SA67 8DE

and also to the Police,Divisional Police Headquarters,
P.O. Box 31,
Haverfordwest,
Pembrokeshire,
SA61 1PF

as im sure that if you can help stop an incident like this happening again you would like to.

I'd advise against that. Oakwood really don't need enthusiasts sending information about the ride. Leave HSE, Oakwood and Intamin to sort this out.

Yup, I'm certain they knew full well about the incident on Perilous Plunge, but the blame was not laid at the feet of the ride. The park installed the additional restraints as a show of regret for the incident and a commitment to safety; they weren't obliged to install them.

Now that may not be the case in this instance as it certainly sounds like a very different set of circumstances, but providing information that they will no doubt already be well aware of will only muddy the waters IMO.

I understand your eagerness to prevent a recurrence though Karl.

Appears that the poor girl has now died. According to the website Hydro is now closed, but for how long do you think it will be?

Sorry, I might have put this wrong.

Someone has been injured, how much we dont yet know.
either way there may, or may not have been a crime commited.

The info you send will help the police, and the park, decide if a crime has been commited or not.

I must stress that people dont fall out of rides as a matter of course and apart from the odd occasion when an individual has tampered with the safety mechanism it is always someones fault.

Your info could help pinpoint "correctly" who's fault it is.
The chances are the police dont have anyone that knows who intermin are, or what "Perilous Plunge" is. Hell im only just beginning to find this stuff out myself.

PS, while i was typing this somefolks have posted that she has died.

our thoughts all go out to the family.

Sad that accidents don't just happen any more. Someone always must be found to blame.

Besides which, I usually am of the opinion that anyone that falls from a ride usually deserves a good dose of whatever blame is dished out. I personally make sure bars are locked, belts clipped etc and make a fuss if they aren't.

Maybe this girl was just unlucky and was let down by a mechanical failiure.

(NOTE : Having re-read that last sentenc, I feel I should point out I didn't mean any kind of sick joke by using the phrase 'let down'.)

Although it will be a great loss to the family we cant rule out the fact that no one knows atm what happend. I am not being cold or hateful, i am looking at both sides of the story when I say this but, For all we know the girl could of been messing around and / or not of fastened the saftey bar into the correct position.

I do like to hear and speak about both sides of accidents as they are not always straight forward and all to often (like car accidents) the driver or in this case theme park get blamed!

Rant over!

*Breaking news there was a report on the local bbc midight news. Police are currently examining the ride and the park will be open as usual tomorrow*

I would imagine indefinitely at the moment. If the HSE decide the ride is unsafe they can order it prohibited, regardless of any action the Police may feel is necessary.

However, the intimation that the a "fat" kid died in a similar fashion on a similar ride is a little distasteful considering the nature of the death.

for heavens sake mate, this isnt "had an accident in the last 3 yrs that wasnt your fault" Replace you word "accidents" with "kids falling from rides and dying" and you might see my point.

It is terrible news. Both for the families involved and the park.

As for sending in information, Oakwood really don't need enthusiasts sending in their opinions about something they are most likely wrong about.

My thoughts go out to all involved.

The News has now hit all the newspapers and news T.V channels.

The lad also fell from the ride, because the lass hit him around the head with her shoe while she fell out.

Hoe can someone just fall out of a ride, then you be taken down by a bash around the head!!! What are Hydros restraints like?

I'm still confused to how anyone could fall out, unless they were standing.

And did they stop the ride and have to get everyone else off from the high part?

Condolences to the family though.

Becuase the mods havn't said anything yet, I will:

Can all speculation about the terrible accident be kept to private conversations, and not posted on a public discussion forum. A young girl has lost her life, let us show our respect by not speculating and fueling rumours. Let the HSE, Oakwood and Intamin do their investigations. Anything enthusiasts say, does get through to the Media, and could esculate into rumours and unreliable concerns

Thanks.

I think it's good that we are discussing it. This place has informed me more than the news...

We can speculate yes, but it seems such an isloated accident. Either the ride was faulty or the girl was messing around.
