Listed like old buildings are listed, ie. preserved from alteration / demolition (in theory). I like the way that BBC report has several images but none of them are of the Scenic Railway. I know what it looks like, thanks. Not only did I go about a month ago to peer through the gates, I saw it on TV last week (in the Jolly Boys Outing episode of Only Fools and horses).

Well this topic has been dead for quite a while but for those who haven't heard here is the next part of the story:
1) Public Inspector said that Dreamland should remain an Amusement Park! 2) Council voted on whether to accept Inspector's Recommendatiosn-all Labour Councillors vote in favour (good) All conservatives vote against it (bad is an understatement). Anyhow that's a very simplistic account of what has happened but if you want to hear more then the lastest news is on the Save Dreamland website www.savedreamland.co.uk OK, as the public enquiry rapidly approaches people have the chance to make their views known in the Isle of Thanet Gazette. Basically anyone can add a message (you don't have to be local', it's free and very quick. Although it won't directly influence the Council it will ensure that the campaign has the full support of the major local paper which would be a great boost in saving Dreamland. Presently the results are. 37 messages support preserving the entire site as an amusement park 4 comments would like atlest a portion to be designated to an alternative use (eg as an ice skating rink). Thanks for the tip Jake although I don't entirely share your notion. The address works as a hyper link for me so whether it's because you have a different browser etc I don't know.
At the end of the day I'm not linking to some page peeps will glanze at, say "that was mildly interessting", and move on. I'm linking to a page where people can make a difference over whether or not one of the Countries greatest amusement/theme parks is saved. The Save Dreamland campaign (which incidentally has over 13,000 members) has been presenting people with many ways in which they can show their support and this is by far the easiest yet. If people don't want to copy and paste the address into another browser it suggests that perhaps they aren't interessted. If one of the greatest amusement treasures is replaced by a super market will you be the one saying "I could have helped save it but didn't because I'm too lazy!". I know this sounds like I'm having a go and I'm not meaning to, just trying to be a little ironic (it's just my personality). The point of this message is to show how passionately many people feel about saving the park and how it really isn't all that difficult/time consuming to leave a short message (many people have spent time writting whole letters). |

I take it the Conservatives are in majority then? Probably looking to line their pockets from the monitary fallout from a supermarket land grab

My h'apenny? first theme park I ever did was Dreamland- Looping Star first then Scenic Railway... and I went on that about 4 times... it rocked!
Tussauds should buy it and ship it to Thorpe... I might be old, I might be a bit sad but do I care? not likely  Malky -------------------- It's a GINGA thing!

Sorry Swampster. Yes, my fingers type faster than my mind thinks, but yes, the Conservatives hold a majority.
Tubtatto, the only solution I'd be happy with is seeing the entire Park saved. Dreamland's roots go back over 100 years and I don't see why one or two people should suddenly destroy it for the sake of money. Joking apart realistically because it's so old it can't be moved as the wood as sort of welded (for want of a better term) together. I know that's not a very technical way of putting it but all that could be moved is the trains, so effectively trying to move it would mean starting again. If you want this great coaster to roll into the next decade then please leave your comments supporting the campaign on the Thanet Gazette website! |

Neil, I also agree that the park should be saved... trouble is I'm not sure it will be. there has been so much talk about the park over the years that I'm afraid the council will start to think it's all be heard before... and some developer with big pockets can speak quite loudly if you know what I mean.

I have added my two penneth worth to the debate on that site. However looking at the included vote on that site, there have either been some "spoiler votes" or there are a LOT of short sighted people about.
I can't believe 43% would vote that it's an ideal site for a shopping centre or housing. I have just checked, the voting script does allow multiple votes... and if it does complain, you just refresh and vote again. As somebody pointed out, in their comments post.. they "smell a rat". I know it seems like years (well I suppose it is) but when Dreamland was closed it was quite sudden (although with hindsight owner Jimmy Godden had development in mind for years). Just because this is dragging on a while is not a reason to give in. I whole heartedly believe that if the campign hangs in there it will only be a matter of time before the place is saved. Remember we managed to convince both the major local paper (Thanet Gazette) and the Public Inspector that the entire site should remain an amusment park. It can only be a matter of time before we pursuade the remaing portion of the Council. I fully agree with Swampster that the result was very odd (particularly as it does not reflect the comments left or the results turned on a surevey form in the paper). Luckily for whatever reason it has now risen back up to 83% (presumably because most people do want to see the park saved).
